Newcastle Gateshead Comedy Festival returns in March 2008
A solid week of laughter is what we hope the return of the Newcastle Gateshead
comedy festival will bring to the region in March next year, as a whole host of
top comedians descend on Tyneside armed with gags, jokes, banter, slapstick, tall
tales and witty insights and observations. Once
again organised by local entrepreneur Warren Speed and his events company Growling
Clown Entertainment (of which Funny Bones Comedy is a subsidiary), the festival
takes place at a number of the area's best venues - the SageGateshead, Northern
Stage, Newcastle City Hall and the new bistro bar venue As You Like It in Jesmond.
Says Warren "Comedy has been a major passion of mine for a long time
now, and I feel privileged to be able to play such a central role in the return
of the festival. Historically the Newcastle comedy festival was second only to
the Edinburgh festival in terms of size and national awareness, and that's where
I would eventually love us to get back to. We ran the festival in 2006, and then
we've missed 2007 as we agreed with the councils that we would move the festival
from October to March. "With
the close links between Newcastle and Gateshead now, we felt it appropriate in
2006 to rename the event as the Newcastle Gateshead comedy festival, and we are
particularly pleased that the prestigious SageGateshead and Northern Stage venues
were both keen to get involved. It is also nice to have Newcastle City Hall involved
which was built in 1927, along with a much newer and very different venue - the
bistro and terrace bar As You Like It in Jesmond, which has a lovely function
room ideal for smaller shows. "As
a born and bred North Easterner, who has lived in Newcastle for the last eighteen
years, I know how much we love to laugh up here, and I hope all of the festival
shows bring as much hilarity to the region as I expect they will. In 2008 we again
have a large and diverse selection of top rated comedians, many of whom have international
performing experience, and all of whom I am sure will do a fine job of entertaining
their audiences." Performers
at the 2008 comedy festival include Omid Djalili who many people will know from
TV and even certain Hollywood films, and who has a live show at Newcastle City
Hall on Saturday 8 March. On the same day there is also the Dave Johns and Steve
Frost Improv All Stars performing two shows at the SageGateshead - very much in
the vein of TVs "Who's Line Is It Anyway" this is a show that has wowed
audiences around the world, with a renowned team that for Gateshead includes Phill
Jupitus, Dave Johns (the original Newcastle comedy festival director), Steve Frost,
Andy Smart and Steve Steen - all recognisable faces from TV comedy shows. Also
performing at the festival is Jason Cook originally from Wallsend, who won many
prestigious five star reviews for his one hour show at this years Edinburgh festival.
3'6" Canadian Tanyalee Davis makes her first visit to Tyneside bringing her
acclaimed "Little Do They Know" show to the Northern Stage. Also coming
is Paul Sinha who was nominated for stand-up's most prestigious prize at the Edinburgh
fringe - The if.comedy award (previously the Perrier). The ever popular Patrick
Monahan, the half Irish-half Iranian cheeky chappie who was brought up in North
Yorkshire is back with his latest show "Feel The Love", also performing
is Scotland's famously camp top comedian Craig Hill, along with another cutting
Glaswegian Janey Godley. The
festival isnt purely about stand-up comedy either, Pete Firman (regularly seen
on CH4s "Dirty Tricks") is a mad magician with a comedy slant who performs
at Northern Stage on Thursday 6 March. And on the same day there is also The Velvet
Rose burlesque revue and The Midnight Circus - two shows for the price of one
that promise glamour, tease, excitement and humour of a different kind. The
festival opens on Monday 3 March at the SageGateshead with "Comedy Excentrique",
a big show hosted by the has-to-be-seen-to-be-believed Mrs Barbara Nice, the fantastic
housewife comic creation of actress Janice Connolly (who was in "Phoenix
Nights", and also played Peter Kya's mother in Coronatiuon Street) - also
in this show are a trio of top comedy circuit acts - Bill Wooland, Andy White
and Steve Williams, and the show also features the spectacular Cathouse Belles
dance troupe and amazing circus aerialist Haylee-Mai. The
festival closes on Sunday 9 March at Newcastle's City Hall with "Northern
Glory", another big show featuring six top comedians who were all born and
bred in the North East of England - compere Richard Morton plus Gavin Webster,
Sarah Millican, Steffen Peddie, Mark Maier and Warren Speed performing as his
slapstick burlesque alter-ego Carrington! Full
information on all of the comedy festival shows can be found on www.newcastlegatesheadcomedyfestival.com
