Penny Ashton aka Hot Pink

Penny Ashton's mother knew she was in for trouble when at the age of five she pulled on her first tutu, ate her first lipstick and declared herself a ballerina. Since hanging up her ballet slippers, due to a pesky need to eat, Penny has become New Zealand’s leading comedy poet, performing by request all over New Zealand, North America and the UK. Though she has only been doing comedy for two years, Ashton has twice been nominated for New Zealand's Top Comedy Award and for Best Female Comedienne. She has recorded her own live show on Radio New Zealand, is a regular book reviewer for them and is the author of her own popular online column with up to 5000 readers a week. In 2003 she was part of the victorious New Zealand team at the Improvaganza Theatresports Tournament in Canada and has made numerous television appearances as an actor and a comedienne. In 2004 she interviewed comedy poetry legend Pam Ayres for the New Zealand's leading daily paper and has had poems published in various journals and magazines. She is also an experienced voice over artist and has lent two of her nastiest voices to a couple of vicious she-monsters On Power Rangers.

“Penny Ashton's Hot Pink, A Poetic Cabaret at Auckland's Temple Bar is an evening of sexual angst and activity by a desperately seeking 20-something. Surveying her world in a couple of dozen poetic monologues she rummages through ideas on fats, food, pick-up lines, her virgin/whore dilemma, make-up, looming old age (30) and an archaeology of the bars of Auckland. This is poetic graffiti in cabaret form at its best. She presents the acceptable face of poetry, using it as a means of creating brilliant images of life.”
John Daly-Peoples, NBR, Friday 22.11.02

“The show is funny, clever and doesn’t underestimate the intelligence of the audience – all in all it is a great night out.”
Hilary McMillan – TV2 International LAUGH! Festival Director

“We had great feedback from our listeners when Penny performed on our show. We even passed on emails to Penny from our listeners requesting copies of some of her poems. Furthermore, some of the poems made us blush. We regard this as a success on her part.”
Jon Bridges

“Penny Ashton is a hot new talent, exploding onto the stage and bringing poetry back into fashion the way Baz Luhrman brought back the musical.”
Rebecca Hobbs

"Mothers, lock up your sons. Hot Pink is in town." NZOOM

"Ashton could very well be New Zealand's answer to Renee Zellweger. After all, she has the social life of Bridget Jones and likes to sing songs from Chicago." NZOOM

"The Hot Pink poet had the audience in the palm of her hand. Original, good audience rapport and colourful! Her set transformed the performance space into a riot of plastic flowers. Penny is a great communicator who is always willing to get out amongst the media and sell herself." Philip Tremewan - Lake Taupo Festival of the Arts

"Hot Pink was very well received by the Nelson audience. Penny is a professional and presents a funny show that has broad appeal and the poetry is great. Her presentation and personality is fantastic…" Annabel Norman - Nelson Festival of the Arts

"Terrific original poems and songs effortlessly melded…" Wanganui Chronicle

"Penny created a comic persona to MC for our "winter wonderland" event, warmed up the crowd, did the links between our management team's respective speeches, and even recited her especially penned poem on Heritage Hotels, to the delight of the audience; all without one swear word or off colour joke!

The use of Penny Ashton's MC talents, in our opinion, added a further enjoyable dimension for our guests and we would not hesitate to recommend Penny for other corporate event work." Susan Gibson - Heritage Hotels

"Ashton is the kind of comedian I really love...the type of woman you'd want to be friends with..." The Package

"What an amazing entertainer Penny Ashton is. She certainly is a cabaret poetry performer, especially with her opening song "All That Jazz". What a tremendous singer! She captivated the audience all the way." River City Press
