Martin Evans

Martin Evans is a bit confused. That's not completely his fault though. Having a Welsh Dad, a Scottish Mum, born in sunny Slough and growing up in South Africa. It was bound to happen.

Martin started out as a radio DJ in 1995 on Campus Bay FM. (A small backwater station in the sad and frightening coastal town of Port Elizabeth). He enjoyed it but yearned for more and rumours spread fast that several listeners of the station were devastated to hear Martin was leaving the station. But in 1996 he won the Coca Cola Student DJ competition and in the same year he hosted two of the largest live music festivals in the Eastern Cape, but to be honest that stage of his life was a bit of a blur. He enjoyed the late nights, the easy women, the free drinks and after parties and after a year of this he decided he had to knuckle down and concentrate on his career so in 1997 he moved to the UK and immediately started working at a commercial FM station in Swansea. Which was fun! But did he still want be a radio DJ, especially in Swansea?

At this point of his life Martin thought he'd take a crack at stand-up comedy. He had already done a variety of comedy shows in his past for live radio and one-off events. Also he had experience in compering with events from outside-broadcasts performing to over 8000 people, to work within a large section of South African music, arts and culture. He had also done many varied commercial voice-overs due to his large mix of accents and characters.

Martin's style of comedy was based on reality. Growing up in South Africa and the cultural difference between South Africa and England. Martin was witness to the lies and deception that apartheid created and this used to be the basis of some of the best gags he wrote, but due to death threats and 1 assassination attempt he changed to more universal material about Kebabs and Ground Force.

For the last few years, Martin has been performing comedy in his home city of Cape Town, South Africa and has built up a fast reputation with the comics and promoters alike with his fresh and original material.

Martin also didn't have a bad year last year on the UK Stand-Up circuit. Martin won the Laughing Horse Big Big New Act competition during the London Comedy Festival, beating off another 100 plus new. He followed that up with winning the London Heats of the FHM Holsten Pils Stand Up comedy tour and Martin was selected as a semi-finalist at the prestigious Channel 4 "So you think your funny" competition held at the Guilded Balloon in Edinburgh. In September, Martin was awarded runner at the national finals of the FHM Holsten Pils Stand-Up comedy tour at the Bedford in Balham. In November Martin was involved with the 'CARE INTERNATIONALS' Iraqi War Relief Benefit. On the bill that night Martin was supporting Dave Gorman, Simon Munnery and John Hegley.
