Alan began performing stand-up in early 2008 and, after reaching the semi-finals of So You Think You’re Funny on only his seventh gig, decided he might as well take it seriously. Since then he has come a long way in a short time, performing around 130 gigs in his first year, establishing himself as a regular presence on the Scottish comedy circuit and playing many top clubs around the rest of the country and beyond. Despite a somewhat scary appearance, Alan has an amiable on-stage persona for the most part, except when launching into a rant about one of the many things that piss him off. Most of his material is drawn from his own peculiar life, together with topical humour drawn from the current headlines. Alan has a natural stage presence, having formerly been a professional actor. Some have commented that he looks a little serial-killerish, which is appropriate as he is also a published true crime author and lectures on the subject, including having been an invited speaker at two major US true crime conferences. In 2003 he was also part of a sketch comedy group that performed to over 17,000 people over three performances at the Point Depot in Dublin. All of this has led to his being a relaxed and comfortable performer, and audiences quickly warm to his sometimes slightly surreal and bizarre tales and quirky one-liners. He is a capable performer over 15-20 minutes, as opener or main support for smaller clubs or as a reliable middle spot at larger ones. Alan is also one fifth of Fit o’ the Giggles, an Edinburgh based comedy promotion company who run two weekly gigs in the city (Fit o’ the Giggles and Absolute Beginners) as well as irregular shows around the Lothian region. He performed throughout the 2008 Edinburgh Fringe in an ensemble show at the Mercat Bar, and will be returning in 2009 in a three man show, The Fabulous Furry Freakshow, at Madogs on George Street.
