BBC Radio regular Chris Neill is well known to millions of listeners from his waspish and acidic regular appearances on Just A Minute and Broadcasting House. He has written for and appeared on a multitude of other BBC networked shows including Linda Smith’s Brief History of Time-Wasting, Serious About Comedy, Sean Lock’s 15 Storeys High, Josie Long’s series All The Planet’s Wonders, Quote … Unquote, Audio Diaries, Today, PM and The Husky Betty Marsden (a documentary he wrote and presented) as well as various BBC World Service programmes and on Richard Bacon and Men's Hour on 5Live. In 2010 he presented a one-off show for BBC Radio Scotland about his Scottish roots, 25% Leith.
Further voice work includes an acerbic narration for an ITV clip show; Owl in all 52 episodes of Poppy Cat for Nick Jr, Lord Cutler Beckett in a Disney Pirates Of The Caribbean video game and yet another English baddie, Sir James Tyrrell, in an audio Dr Who.
The man memorably described as “sounding like a cross between Julian Clary and Kenneth Williams, but looking like Sgt Bilko”( The Scotsman ) is a hit on the UK stand-up circuit with his trademark sharp tongue and fund of outrageous anecdotes. He has appeared all over the country with his tall tales and barbed asides leading the London Evening Standard to hail him, “this acidic storyteller is the natural successor to Kenneth Williams.” He was a core performer in the British Comedy Award-nominated Robin Ince’s Book Club,and for over five years he was heard every week on BBC Radio Scotland’s MacAulay & Co show in his own slot.
Despite working as a comedian, after-dinner speaker, writer and broadcaster for a number of years, since 2008 when he presented his hit Edinburgh Fringe cooking-cum-comedy show Chris Neill's Got A Bun In The Oven he has has garnered a burgeoning reputation as an intelligent and knowledgeable but very funny voice on the subject of food.
Increasingly in demand, he has written for Guardian Word of Mouth and The Spectator blogs as well as for the Fire & Knives quarterly. He regularly turns up on the radio when ready wit and insight are called for on all matters culinary - discussing everything from VAT on breakfast to barbecues and the best way with chicken hearts.
Recently, as presenter, he piloted a new ITV format Ripping Off The Restaurants and has also appeared on UKTV's Market Kitchen. He is booked to host numerous events at food festivals and is a regular team captain on a new BBC Radio food quiz. Also, he is currently in development with Maverick Television to co-present a new BBC2 cookery series.
