Judy Batalion

Canadian Judy Batalion began performing stand-up in London in February 2005, and just a few gigs later, was selected as a Semi-Finalist in both the UK-wide Funny Women and Channel 5 So You Think You're Funny competitions. Her 'surreal act batters the audience into submission' (The Argus) and combines an expressive delivery with a sardonic twist, addressing topics ranging from sibling-rivalry to psychic-transformation, identity decay, and American coffee cups. Judy appeared at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival Fringe in shows including Funny Women at the Fringe, and Ants With Feelings ('side-splitting ... total madness' **** - Three Weeks) and is due to perform in both Edinburgh and Brighton Festival Fringes in 2006.

While her stand-up is classically observational, her comedic plays tend
toward the absurd, with protagonists ranging from a bus-driving psychoanalyst to a hooker-ring that works the British Library. Her scripts have been staged in London and Australia, and her play Cycloanalysis was staged at Edinburgh 2004 ('glorious madness ... a madcap writer' - The Scotsman, 'A hilariously funny romp...The individual characters are simply great' **** - The Edinburgh Guide). Judy, recipient of a Quebec Government performing arts grant, has worked as a director, dramaturge and producer for comedy theatre. She is currently compiling an anthology of writing about comedy audiences to be published by Parlor Press, USA.

Judy performs stand-up regularly in and around London, where she continues to experiment with style and content. By day, she is a writer, editor and curator and is completing a PhD in art history. She studied and trained in Canada, the USA and the UK.
