right sense of the word...what he has in abundance is the charm, don't-give-a-damn

You can tell you're watching a special kind of stand-up when the audience around you is made up of other comedians and comedy critics on their third or fourth visit, all desperate to see a performer who was the talk of the 2002 Edinburgh Fringe.
While some of the biggest names in comedy slugged it out at the major venues, armed with more recognisable names and massive PR budgets, Doug Stanhope - a Fringe debutant - sneaked in for a short run of five gigs in a small pub venue and walked away with the critics prize for the best show of the Festival.
We are delighted to bring Doug back to the UK for his first major UK shows since taking Edinburgh by storm and we are equally convinced that the buzz he generates around Glasgow will be just as great as it was back in August.
If there is one universal opinion about Doug Stanhope he is happy to agree with it's that he is not for everybody. His material ranges from true-life graphic perversion to volatile social criticism. Doug is vulgar, opinionated, brutally honest and shockingly uninhibited yet manages to remain truly, if not curiously, likeable.
His stand-up has been featured on several US television shows including Comedy Central Presents, Premium Blend, NBC's Late Friday as well as appearances on The Howard Stern Show and SpyTV. He also wrote, produced and starred in Fox's Invasion of the Hidden Cameras, which aired in the US in summer 2002.
Stanhope's third live CD, Die Laughing, released in March of 2002, takes stabs at everything from abortion to school shootings to Jesus. Previous CD's Sicko and Something to Take the Edge Off are balanced with more autobiographical stories about drugs, prostitution and other tales of life from a road less travelled.
