James Mullinger began his stand up career early 2005. In his first eighteen months he excelled himself, most notably by reaching the final of three major comedy competitions. They were: Jimmy Carr's Comedy Idol (which resulted in a performance alongside Carr at The Comedy Store that appeared on Carr's DVD 'Stand Up'), You Must Be Joking at the Newbury Comedy Festival and Your Comedy Stars at the Edinburgh Festival. In July 2005 James performed at the Just For Laughs festival in Montreal. Canada's best-selling newspaper The National Post described him as "a dashing comic". And Ottawa newspaper Nepean This Week reported that "talented comedian James Mullinger was singled out as one of the most exciting new acts of the festival". He performed his first full length solo show at the Camden Fringe in August 2009, titled: James Mullinger Is The Bad Boy Of Feminism. The controversial subject matter and painfully funny anecdotes were a hit with both critics and audiences at the Camden Fringe in August. Both shows sold out and Time Out described it as “very funny stuff” and it was named one of the best shows by the Evening Standard, Metro and London Lite. James continues to perform all over the UK (in Edinburgh, Southampton, Totton, Havant, Liverpool, Leicester, Bristol, Stamford, Nottingham, Taunton, Northampton) and around the world (Australia, North America). He is currently resident compere of the Upstairs at the Masons comedy club in Mayfair. Recent headliners include Richard Herring, Stephen Merchant, Stewart Lee, Shappi Khorsandi and Michael McIntyre. What they say about his compering skills: "James has a special way of banter. It makes me cry with laughter. The audience is never disappointed with James at the helm of the comedy ship" - Jarred Christmas "A great compere, always warm and engaging, instantly likeable and guarantees to whip up an audience to make for a great show. The fact he has a lovely face always helps too." - Shazia Mirza "James is a great compere with a warm personality and funny material." - Norman Lovett "James is full of wit, charm and candour." - Scott Capurro "I love it when James hosts a show - you know the crowd will be so up for it and friendly cos he'a funny guy and has a winning smile!" - Patrick Monahan Competitions Television Radio Festivals Press quotes "Slick, efficient... gets the job done." Steve Bennett, Chortle "Jovial" Stephen Armstrong, The Sunday Times “Much loved” www.londontown.com "Mullinger is definitely what could be called a young up and coming stand-up comic. He is a fairly autobiographical stand-up comic with a penchant for some dark material. If this British stand-up comic is at Just For Laughs next year, I will make a point of catching him. Then again, if things go as well as I think they will, he will be part of one or two of the showcase shows I like to attend. If you can catch this comedian at a club near you, do so." - www.theseriouscomedysite.com "A warm set with some memorable lines" - Newbury Today "A dashing comic" - The National Post "Really funny" - Jimmy Carr "A gifted deliverer of punchlines" - London Lite “London-based writer and stand-up comedian James Mullinger is a popular compere on the comedy scene due to his easy audience banter, quick-wit and natural charm. His sets tend to be anecdote-based with a dark edge” www.spoonfed.co.uk
